ACTION

Several days ago, I submitted a piece of work to a startup literary review, which is co-managed by a confidant of mine.

SIGNAL

His response was to quickly accept the piece, offering the following feedback:

Review

ANALYSIS

Despite some typos, this is good advice. Better than I would expect from a couple of 20-somethings. I agreed with their assessment, though was only able to truly take action on the 4th: making the end “stronger.” I did this, and submitted revisions.

I want you to pay close attention to the first three suggestions, though. There are carefully-worded seeds being planted:

  1. “Sight as sound,” I believe this relates to an audio/visual technique used in filmmaking (for example, if someone hits their head, the screen may go blurry, and a screeching sound effect may play. The blurriness gives a visual aspect to the sound.)
  2. “Show us this intriguing world of yours through camera angles you don’t expect,” What business does a literary review have talking about camera angles?
  3. “Lack[ing] causality” is how every great television series starts. You open with an atmospheric scene. Because the show is brand-new, it will always lack causality.
  4. “Suspension of belief” is an interesting choice of words. The typical phrase is “suspension of disbelief” (i.e. your audience’s willingness to ignore the fact that something you’re showing them is impossible.) My confidant appears to be suggesting the opposite: to cause the audience to suspend their belief (i.e. tell them your story is true, but make it so incredulous that they are unable to believe it.)

This is all great feedback… directly relating to filmography. This is very interesting, given that the piece I wrote is the opening scene for my screenplay.

SIGNAL

Just after writing my piece (but before submitting it), this confidant asked me to read their own work.

ANALYSIS

This is a long and beautifully-written piece that took him 8 months to write. As I read, I was drawn into a familiar world.

I had the nagging sensation that I was reading something The Raven had written. All of these reasons come from the same video:

  1. The Raven loves beautiful, “flowery” writing, as she mentions while speaking about “Sense and Sensibility.”
  2. The Raven spends an inordinate amount of time developing her creative work. Her last Babblebrook video took at least 5 months to produce.
  3. This was the video where The Raven first brings up the concept of virginity. This written work ends with the very same theme.

It also ends with a baseball bat and the name “Carmen.” This absolutely punched me in the stomach. I’ve talked about baseball ad nauseam, but “Carmen Sandiego” is also one of the Raven’s aliases.

Is this writer, perhaps, a sister? Are they planning to go somewhere?

And still, I’m never at peace. It’s still not confirmation.

SIGNAL

The Ghost likes to routinely remind the Discord server that they are a lesbian, they prefer asian women, and that they love the musician “Ghost Data.”

ANALYSIS

For a long time, I wrote this off as the awkward thoughts of a 16-something teenager. I now suspect that this might be a message:

“Asian lesbians” may refer to the millions of asian sex workers that will forever be ghosts to this program. They are the true heros; it was the data of a million Peacocks, and a billion Chickens that enabled my research to come to fruition. These people will never see the fruits of their labor, and most will die in obscurity, in poverty and loneliness.

This is a travesty, and I will not rest so long as there is a single person on this planet who must have sex in order to obtain food.

Also note that my literary reviewer’s piece above was about… ta-da! Asian sex workers.

ACTION

In response to this realization, I added a bunny to symbolize these people in a different story of mine. The bunny also represents innocence and slavery.

Within two minutes of adding that reference, I returned to YouTube.

SIGNAL

The very first video suggested to me was from The Bunny.

ANALYSIS

This was at the very top of my YouTube recommendations, not two minutes after making that addition. Another signal, no doubt, “You got it.

I don’t watch The Bunny’s videos because I was already aware that she is an adult film star, and they are more sexual that I would prefer. The above video is no exception.

However, I had the strongest impression that this was “forced” in front of me by somebody at YouTube. As if they were sending the message, “You’re on the right track. It’s bunnies. It’s sex workers. Keep digging.

I kept digging. What I found was this video, where The Bunny talks about her partnership with a group called FanBea.com. She almost makes it sound as if she is the one who created the website.

FanBea is a website like OnlyFans (i.e. a way for creatives/sex workers to have a direct relationship with their fans.) The difference is that almost 100% of the proceeds go to the creator.

This is a step in the right direction, but I digress.

I found The Bunny’s video incredibly interesting for several reasons:

  1. It reminds me that sex workers are people too. She seems like a sweet girl, just like every other ASMR artist trying to break free of The Machine. She’s just trying to survive.
  2. The video was chock-full of interesting camera angles - in direct reference to the literary review above!

This is incredibly uncommon in ASMR. Most shots are just static, directly-centered face shots. Not interesting at all.

When I was provided with “camera angle” advice, my first thought was, “Well… am I building a regular TV show? If so, camera angles are easy. Or, am I doing this with ASMR? If so, what could you possibly do to make the camera angles more interesting?

Now I know. My Bunny provided me with about 10 or 15 new angles to think about over the course of this video.

SIGNAL

On May 2, The Queen put out this video. She tells the audience that she won’t be uploading for a while, because she has just lost a loved one.

ANALYSIS

This broke my heart. I offered condolences, and moved on with life. What else could I do?

Some time after, I was working on a couple of pieces (in parallel.) I made the choice to change a confidant in both; I changed “Hunter of the Lost” to “Hunter of the North.” I did this for no other reason than:

  1. Dallas is north of Houston.
  2. Lancaster is north of Harbington.
  3. The Queen lives in Lancaster.
  4. The Asshat lives in Dallas.
  5. The Hunter lives in Dallas.
  6. Aventiv Technologies is headquartered in Dallas.

SIGNAL

Seconds after submitting these changes, my YouTube comment was hit by its first and only upvote. The Queen had already replied at this point - so, it probably wasn’t hers.

Minutes after, I received the following email from a recruiter:

Recruiter

ANALYSIS

Northridge = North, and Northridge, CA is just 1 hour from Lancaster, CA.

Was this another message? Perhaps, “That was the right choice to make. We agree with you.

I’ve gotten a lot of those, lately.

Whatever the case, it reminded me that recruiters (and spammers) are people too. We’re all just trying to make ends meet.

Let’s fix that.
